Media, the news and our approach to public commentary

Caroline Chisholm Society is an engaged member of our community. We work in Moonee Valley, Caroline Springs and Shepparton, and represent our local communities in state-wide forums. We are particularly concerned about issues facing expectant and new mothers and their families, including pregnancy, early parenting, childcare and kindergarten, social isolation, perinatal mental health, poverty, homelessness and family violence.

We will never pass on an opportunity to talk about the needs of mums and their families with local candidates.

Tag us if you’re talking about pregnancy, babies and toddlers during this state election. We’ll share! As a Mum, I know a support network can make all the difference.

That’s why I’m passionate about ensuring families have access to organisations like the Caroline Chisholm Society.

I recently sat down with CEO Helen Cooney to better understand the outstanding work they’re doing in our local community, offering support services to pregnant women and parents of young kids.

Did you know? Out West we’re growing by a “Geelong-sized city” every ten years until 2050. By then we’ll have nearly 1.8 million people, which will be over 20% of Melbourne’s population.

When you think about it like that, it seems crazy that governments aren’t lining up to give us the money for a new approach to health and social support services for those of us that aren’t as well as off as we’d like to be.

Every child and family should have the same opportunity to thrive.

Helping to keep the community warm during Winter

Volunteer Bronwyn, with Sarah from the Nathalia Night Watch branch of CWA. Recently, we received 12 single bed blankets that were lovingly made by Nathalia residents. The donation is part of the ‘knit while you wait’ program, where baskets of wool and knitting needles are left at offices that require you to wait for appointments – eg: doctor’s surgeries. Squares are knitted by members of the community and the CWA women collect the squares and sew them into blankets.

The women from Nathalia CWA work or are busy during the day, so they meet at night once a month. As with all the branches of CWA, they do lots of things behind the scenes to assist their respective communities. Nathalia CWA are known as the younger brigade and say that even though they don’t know how to knit, they can achieve the same result by organising production, then sewing together the knitted squares to make the blankets.

We wish to thank the CWA Night Watch branch for their continued support this Winter.
